Thang I would not add any salt at this point.salt is an irritant and it will make the fish continue to shed mucus.they don't need that at the moment.what they need is real good water If you have a scrape you would put some Polysporin on it.if you have an infection then you would use an 's that kind of a comparison. Is it possible that all his fish are having a problem, shedding excess mucus not from a possible Overdose of oil, but because they have a bacterial or parasite problem?Ģnd who do I believe, Doctors Erik Johnson, Sandra Yosha, or Helen Roberts all Vets, that melalecua has only minor anti-bacterial properties.good for very simple things, along with my own experiences and others, along with tons of anecdotal reports of the ''Fixes'' being gill irritants or Jack Wattley.Hmmmm. It's quite possible that Thang OD his fish with it.the question is what caused the problem in the 1st place. But overdosing a tank with anything will create problems whether it is a natural remedy or drugs.ġst off.no doubt that overdosing any chem or meds will have adverse affects on the tank and the fish. If the fish is more seriously ill obviously an antibiotic should be used. Many SD people have used Melafix for Popeye, but are afraid to post that they have, because they don't want to be flamed by those with closed minds. But before he did anything for treatment at all, I advised him to please clean his filter, which he did, and found it to be very dirty. From what he says, that particular fish did NOT become worse, but all of his fish are having a problem now. Again, it was expected that the fish would be observed for any signs of becoming worse. I also advised that if Melafix did nothing for about 4-5 days, to move on to Maracyn 2. I advised him to try Melafix first, of course following dosage instructions was expected. In fact, from their reaction, I would say that Melafix has been overdosed with every single dosage administered, not just on one day. Thang's Discus are having a reaction to overdosing. So I must disagree with you, this is actually a case of overdosing Melafix, and NOT a case of "the magical powers and marketing of Melafix have allowed a fish to be come sicker." The part where Thang states that he thinks he put too much in the tank should NOT be ignored. Thang did not clean his filter for about 5 mos. Thang's Discus had a cloudy eye that was bigger than the other, and that's all. Graham, I take what Jack Wattley has to say seriously. they have a parasite and something like Quick Cure should be used. The fish either have a bacterial infection where a proper antibiotic like Furan, TC, Maracyan 1 or 2 should be used.or. Thang the slime coat isn't fading it's getting thicker and being sloughed off. This is a prefect case where the magical powers and marketing of Melafix have allowed a fish to be come sicker. :).Ĭonnie I'm not sure where Jack came up with the idea that Melaleuca has strong anti bacterial properties. It has some anti fungal and anti- bacterial affects but they are very mild. Wow, that's good to know, I never heard of it being used for popeye before, just injuries. for treating bacterial and fungal problems is that the liquid oils do not interfere with the biological filtration in the discus aquarium. And with the strong antibacterial properties found in the Melaleuca oils, the period of treatment can be relatively short. Jack states: Melaleuca oil is a complex essential oil that neutralizes fungus and bacteria. It works well and fast.įor anybody that thinks Melafix is "snake oil" there's a very interesting response by Jack Wattley regarding Melaleuca Oil (which is in Melafix) and its usage in the TFH May 2007 issue. ![]() Marie even used it for one of her gobies and she said after 2 days the Popeye was gone. By the next day after I used Melafix, the Popeye was gone. ![]() Lots of people on SD PMd me about using it with Popeye when one of my Discus developed it due to being "hit" in the eye by another Discus repeatedly. Actually Melafix is very good for Popeye.
